Salvation in the New Testament

A lot of smart people ask the question: "What must I do to go to heaven?" (In other forms, the question could be stated: "What must I do to be saved?" or "How good do I have to be to get into heaven.") I won't try to answer that question for you - because you'll find that my answer may sound good - but then, so do the answers of so many. But SO MANY are completely WRONG about what God requires of us to "be saved."

Therefore, don't take my word, or anyone else's word - read God's word and decide for yourself. If you still have trouble understanding, by all means, and I'll give you my best answer.

You will find below many (but not all) of the quotations from the Bible that can help you to answer the question. I have quoted them exactly - no sermonizing, no editting. In some cases this may mean that the sentences start with a fragment... that's ok, I tried to be sure to keep the CONTEXT of the statement, not just the statement.

The numbers are references to the passages in the Bible. If you look at the end, you'll see just what is meant. For example: the first passage below starts with "24" and ends with "Matt 16:24-27 (NKJV)". This means that the New Testament book of Matthew [the first book of the New Testament] starting in chapter 16 from verses 24 through 27 are quoted from the New King James Version. Most of the quotes are from the New International Version.

20 who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, 21 and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also--not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward God.
