Concerning BaptismAll quotes from the New International Version. Jesus's words are shown in red. Verse references are given in blue superscript 15He said to them, "Go
into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. 16Whoever
believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. 15The people were waiting expectantly
and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Christ. 16John answered them all, "I baptize you
with water. But one more powerful than I will come, the thongs of whose sandals I am not
worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. 29(All the people, even the tax
collectors, when they heard Jesus' words, acknowledged that God's way was right, because
they had been baptized by John. 30But the
Pharisees and experts in the law rejected God's purpose for themselves, because they had
not been baptized by John.) 50But I have a baptism to
undergo, and how distressed I am until it is completed! 4On one occasion, while he was eating
with them, he gave them this command: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait
for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will
be baptized with the Holy Spirit." 38Peter replied, "Repent and be
baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.
And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39The
promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off--for all whom the Lord
our God will call." 12But when they believed Philip as he
preached the good news of the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were
baptized, both men and women. 13Simon
himself believed and was baptized. And he followed Philip everywhere, astonished by the
great signs and miracles he saw. 14When the apostles in
Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to
them. 15When they arrived, they prayed for
them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16because
the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had simply been baptized into the
name of the Lord Jesus. 17Then Peter and
John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord--Jesus, who appeared
to you on the road as you were coming here--has sent me so that you may see again and be
filled with the Holy Spirit." 18Immediately,
something like scales fell from Saul's eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was
baptized, 19and after taking some food, he
regained his strength. 44While Peter was still speaking these
words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. 45The
circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy
Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. 46For
they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said, 47"Can anyone keep these people from being baptized
with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have." 48So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus
Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days. 15"As I began to speak, the Holy
Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning. 16Then
I remembered what the Lord had said: 'John baptized with water, but you will
be baptized with the Holy Spirit.' 17So
if God gave them the same gift as he gave us, who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who
was I to think that I could oppose God?" 14One of those listening was a woman
named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, who was a worshiper of
God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul's message. 15When
she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. "If
you consider me a believer in the Lord," she said, "come and stay at my
house." 29The jailer called for lights, rushed
in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. 30 He then brought them out and asked,
"Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" 31They
replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved--you and your
household." 32Then they spoke the word of the Lord
to him and to all the others in his house. 33At
that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he
and all his family were baptized. 34The
jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy
because he had come to believe in God--he and his whole family. 8Crispus, the synagogue ruler, and his
entire household believed in the Lord; and many of the Corinthians who heard him believed
and were baptized. 1While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took
the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples 2and asked them, "Did you receive the Holy
Spirit when you believed?" They answered, "No, we have not even heard that there
is a Holy Spirit." 3So Paul asked,
"Then what baptism did you receive?" "John's baptism," they replied. 4Paul said, "John's baptism was a baptism of
repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in
Jesus." 5On hearing this, they were
baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. 6When
Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and
prophesied. 13He stood beside me and said, 'Brother
Saul, receive your sight!' And at that very moment I was able to see him. 14"Then he said: 'The God of our fathers has chosen
you to know his will and to see the Righteous One and to hear words from his mouth. 15You will be his witness to all men of what you
have seen and heard. 16And now what are you
waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.' 1What shall we say, then? Shall we go on
sinning so that grace may increase? 2By no
means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? 3Or
don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his
death? 4We were therefore buried with him through
baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the
glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. 13Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified
for you? Were you baptized into the name of Paul? 14I
am thankful that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15so no one can say that you were baptized into my name. 16(Yes, I also baptized the household of
Stephanas; beyond that, I don't remember if I baptized anyone else.) 17For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the
gospel--not with words of human wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power. 1For I do not want you to be ignorant of
the fact, brothers, that our forefathers were all under the cloud and that they all passed
through the sea. 2They were all baptized
into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. 3They
all ate the same spiritual food 4and drank the same
spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that
rock was Christ. 5Nevertheless, God was not
pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered over the desert. 26You are all sons of God through faith
in Christ Jesus, 27for all of you who were
baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. 1Therefore let us leave the elementary
teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of
repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, 2instruction
about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal
judgment. 3And God permitting, we will do
so. 18For Christ died for sins once for all,
the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body
but made alive by the Spirit, 19through
whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison 20who
disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being
built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water, 21and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you
also--not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a good conscience toward
God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22who
has gone into heaven and is at God's right hand--with angels, authorities and powers in
submission to him. |
